The space industry has evolved tremendously in the past 20 years. Today, many segments have shifted away from government control to the private space industry that offers an increasingly diverse portfolio of products and services. This growth is on track to continue in the coming years, as more and more private stakeholders join the space economy. This, in turn, has given rise to many new scalability, trust and privacy challenges. The existing centralized business and security models are becoming less viable by the day, while security and privacy issues continue to be critical. The resulting challenge seems particularly difficult to resolve — how should space enterprises get full exposure to the rapidly growing space market while remaining committed to privacy, security and trust?

As part of our drive to introduce radically new solutions for the space industry, we are leveraging blockchain technology to resolve this issue in the space data segment. We want to do away with costly in-house construction of ground stations, storage and computation resources, and give space companies the ability to build an entirely virtualized ground segment using a variety of third-party resources. This will significantly reduce the time needed to deploy satellites in space as space companies will be able to focus on building and managing their satellites and the data they generate.

Our upcoming ground segment platform, HomePort, is the first element of this infrastructure. It provides a decentralized ground station network directly to any space company or agency, complete with a data management layer. Using smart contracts and blockchain oracles, a space enterprise can quickly compose a Virtual Ground Segment for its satellites, receive the data from them and fast-forward it to clients.

What is the problem?

HomePort operates primarily with third-party stations in a decentralized manner. The decentralized nature and free market philosophy of the platform create an important new issue — the authenticity of participants in the transaction, and verifying control over the flow of data. Every participant in the network needs to have guarantees about the authenticity of both the parties they interact with and the services provided.

How will the partnership solve this?

For this purpose, the companies will work together to integrate their respective platforms. Hypersign will provide their cross-chain DID infrastructure to enable the creation of unique Know-Your-Customer (KYC) processes, internal verification for companies listing their satellites or stations on HomePort, data access management and credentials management for secure communication channels.

Hypersign and Sfera Technologies will further work on advanced authentication features for future large-scale space economy infrastructure, where privacy and security are critical. Given that virtually all sectors of Earth’s economy will eventually use space in one way or another, Sfera Technologies and Hypersign will share a mission to make this participation agile, trusted and fair for everyone.

“We are excited that new and groundbreaking use cases for blockchain in the space industry continue to appear. It’s a wild time in NewSpace with so many new opportunities to launch payloads to Earth orbit, the Moon and beyond, offer services and provide high-tech goods. But all this needs to sit on a sound basis of trust and reliability. I’m happy that we will be working with Hypersign’s great team to further empower our platform’s users and give them more control over their data”, said Zdravko Dimitrov, CEO of Sfera Technologies.

Irfan Khan, Hypersign’s Founder and Head of Business & Strategy added, “We are very excited to be working with HomePort. Identity is increasingly becoming the fundamental layer of any technology stack and team HomePort, who are working hard to democratise SpaceData, recognise the importance of ensuring that the data being collected and distributed is verified and legitimate.”

About Hypersign

Hypersign is a decentralized Identity protocol and identity management stack developed by Hypermine Labs. It offers a simple-to-use authentication solution that secures user data by combining Digital Identity with Blockchain. We are on a mission to eliminate data breaches and empower humans to regain control of their personal data by democratizing security for enterprises at an affordable price point.
